Those moments captured viewers: ‘Succession’ succeeds, ‘The Bear’ eats it up, and a timely ending

At the Emmys, “Succession” enjoyed a triumphant sendoff, winning Best Drama for the third time and securing five additional awards, including three top acting honors.

Another standout was “The Bear,” dominating the comedy category in its debut season with the top prize and three acting awards. The darkly humorous “Beef” also made waves, winning Best Limited Series, with Steven Yeun and Ali Wong becoming the first Asian Americans to win in their categories. Quinta Brunson of “Abbott Elementary” made history as the first Black winner in her category since 1981.

While the night featured expected outcomes, it wasn’t without surprises, including cast reunions from beloved shows like “The Sopranos,” “Cheers,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and more. Host Anthony Anderson delivered a smooth performance, incorporating nostalgia with a “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” theme and involving his mother, Doris Bowman, as the human equivalent of play-off music.

“Succession” continued its dominance, with Matthew Macfadyen, Sarah Snook, and Kieran Culkin winning in their respective categories. Snook, portraying the complex Shiv Roy, credited her pregnancy for enhancing her acting. Culkin emotionally thanked his wife, Jazz, and humorously expressed his desire for more children.

“The Bear” replicated its Golden Globes success, winning for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress in a comedy, along with a supporting actor award. The onstage celebration included a comically long kiss between Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Matty Matheson.

Carol Burnett, the first woman to host a variety show, received a warm welcome, acknowledging progress in the comedy industry. Quinta Brunson, honored by Burnett, made history with her win for Best Actress in a comedy series.

Niecy Nash-Betts, winning Best Supporting Actress in a limited series for “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” thanked herself for believing in her journey and spoke out on behalf of unheard Black and brown women. The night celebrated diversity and talent, making it a memorable 75th Emmys anniversary.
