VATICAN CITY — In St. Peter’s Square, throngs gathered to offer prayers for Pope Francis, who is currently grappling with severe pneumonia in both lungs. The atmosphere was a mix of earnest sorrow for his health struggles, hopeful anticipation for his healing, and appreciation for his impactful leadership that has directed the Catholic Church toward new paths.
The 88-year-old pontiff has shown signs of slight improvement after 11 days in the hospital, although he remains in critical condition. According to the Vatican’s update on Tuesday, he rested well throughout the night.
On a chilly and wet Monday night, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Deputy, led a poignant 45-minute prayer session. The faithful in attendance, numbering around 4,000, clutched their rosary beads tightly, wishing for the Pope’s recovery. Earlier in the evening, the Vatican had issued a relatively positive health report, sparking a glimmer of hope amidst prevailing concerns.
Nevertheless, the mood within the expansive square was somber, as many attendees faced the stark reality that this could be Francis’ twilight period. Seated on folding chairs under umbrellas or standing by the grand colonnades, the gathering was reflective and appreciative of the pope’s contributions.
“His pain is our pain,” remarked Robert Pietro, a Romanian seminarian. Holding a small, fragrant candle as a tribute, he added, “We are also thankful for everything he has imparted to the Church.”
The Rev. Roberto Allison, a priest hailing from Guadalajara, Mexico, highlighted the collective gratitude among his peers for the lessons learned under Francis’ papacy.
After the ceremony, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco provided personalized blessings, lauding the event’s international attendance. “It’s a powerful testament to the unity of our Church,” he noted, as many languages were discernible throughout the prayers.
The Argentine pope, who lost part of a lung during his youth, has been under medical care at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since February 14th. His condition is precarious due to age and underlying lung issues.
Lately, doctors reported no further respiratory crises post-Saturday, with a slight reduction in the supplemental oxygen he requires.
Catholic visitors from Chicago, who had come early holding umbrellas, shared their prayers during mass at St. Peter’s Basilica earlier that day. “We’re grappling with the idea that we might be witnessing the close of his papacy,” remarked Edward Burjek.
This sentiment resonated with Hatzumi Villanueva of Peru, who appreciated Francis’ Latin American heritage, likening his historic significance to that of St. John Paul II. “We pray for his swift recovery and for the continuation of his mission promoting universal peace,” Villanueva expressed, commending his empathy towards migrants and environmental advocacy.
Beyond Vatican boundaries, both devout followers and those less religiously inclined shared intentions for Francis’ wellbeing.
“It’s universally felt,” said Raniero Mancinelli, a renowned tailor for the ceremonial costumes of Francis and his predecessors, from a shop adjacent to the Vatican.
Elisabetta Zumbo, leading a pilgrimage group from Piacenza, Italy, carried a sizable cross and pledged her group’s dedicated prayers for Francis’ health despite the relentless rain. “Emotion and sadness are heavy on our hearts,” she admitted.
Nearby, a London family visiting the basilica observed, “While not Catholic, the connection felt standing here is profound,” acknowledging the shared humanity in Francis’ residence within the grand Vatican architecture.
