NBA delays Bucks-Pelicans matchup due to unprecedented snowstorm in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS — The NBA has decided to postpone the game that was set to take place on Wednesday night in New Orleans, featuring the Milwaukee Bucks and the Pelicans. This decision comes in the wake of an unprecedented winter storm that has blanketed the area with nearly a foot of snow.

On Tuesday, the severe weather conditions created hazardous travel situations in a city that typically is not equipped for such extensive snowfall and has limited resources for snow removal. To mitigate any potential issues caused by the weather, the Milwaukee Bucks opted to arrive in the city a day early, flying in on Monday. Their hope was to circumvent any road safety concerns that could jeopardize the game at the Smoothie King Center, which has a seating capacity of 18,000.

Despite the Bucks’ early arrival, temperatures stayed in the low 30s on Wednesday. Additionally, many major highways around the metro area were shut down by officials, and surface streets remained slick with ice, making travel particularly dangerous. As a result, schools and local businesses in the region also continued to remain closed for the day.

Looking ahead, the Bucks are set to compete in Miami on Thursday, but it remains uncertain if they will be able to leave New Orleans prior to the game, or if they will need to wait until the day of the match to make their flight. Compounding the travel difficulties, Louis Armstrong International Airport has canceled all commercial flights leaving the airport on Wednesday.

The Pelicans are scheduled to play against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night, and it remains to be seen how the ongoing winter weather will impact their travel plans as well.
