Greek authorities advise motorists to install snow chains due to prolonged traffic congestion in several mountainous regions.

Traffic authorities in Greece are advising motorists navigating icy and snowy conditions to equip their vehicles with snow chains. Long traffic delays have been reported in proximity to several ski resorts due to vehicles becoming stranded on treacherous roads.

On Thursday, law enforcement cautioned against traveling to the well-frequented ski destination on Mount Parnassos, as the site itself had shut down due to inclement weather. Additionally, access routes leading to the summit of Mount Parnitha, located on the outskirts of Athens, have been closed off due to heavy snowfall.

On Christmas Day, officials noted that a significant traffic congestion, measuring approximately 5 kilometers (3 miles), occurred near the Parnassos ski area. This gridlock was attributed to various issues, including electric vehicles stalling on the descent from the resort and other cars becoming immobilized on snow-covered roads because they lacked the necessary snow chains or winter tires.

Authorities emphasized the importance of being prepared, reminding drivers of the requirement to use snow chains in regions affected by snow or ice. They also urged motorists to stay informed with current weather forecasts to make safer driving decisions.

Greece’s mountainous regions typically see snowfall throughout the winter season. A new cold front is anticipated to hit the country starting Friday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and significant snowfall in various mountainous areas.
