Dutch authorities in Rotterdam are seeking witnesses to assist with an investigation into a stabbing incident that resulted in the death of one man and the serious injury of another. The attack occurred near the iconic Erasmus Bridge, where a 32-year-old man from Rotterdam was killed and a 33-year-old man from Switzerland was wounded. The suspect, a 22-year-old man from Amersfoort, was apprehended by members of the public and police on Thursday night after reportedly shouting “Allahu akbar” during the assault with two large knives. The motive behind the attack remains unclear as the investigation continues.

The identities of the suspect and the victims have not been disclosed, following Dutch privacy regulations. Reniël Renato David Litecia, a sports instructor, intervened by subduing the attacker with sticks and disarming him during the chaotic scene. Litecia described initially mistaking the situation for a fight but realizing it was a violent attack after approaching the scene. The assailant allegedly targeted one individual in an underground parking lot before attacking a second victim near a bustling terrace by the bridge.

Police spokesperson Kristel Arntz highlighted that it is too early to determine the motive behind the stabbing, emphasizing the importance of questioning the suspect and reviewing witness testimonies. The suspect is currently in custody as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the violent incident in Rotterdam.
