In upstate New York, four police officers sustained head trauma after their two police vehicles collided while responding to a call for backup. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Albany when officers requested assistance while dealing with a combative suspect, as indicated by the Albany Police Department press release. Responding to the call in separate SUVs, the officers ended up crashing into each other.
Chief Eric Hawkins of the Albany Police Department mentioned during a news briefing outside Albany Medical Center that all four officers involved in the crash sustained head injuries, with two being severe, and one officer also suffered serious leg injuries. Fortunately, all officers were expected to recover from their injuries. Images from the crash scene displayed the two vehicles significantly damaged. The chief noted there was uncertainty about whether either SUV had its siren activated at the time of the collision.
The suspect, who was the initial reason for the police response, was apprehended on charges including drug possession and obstructing governmental administration. It was not specified if the suspect had legal representation. Additionally, the first two officers at the scene received treatment for potential exposure to cocaine following the incident.
