Suki Waterhouse stumbled upon the Sparklemuffin spider during a late-night browse and found it adorable, especially since it dances. The arachnid served as inspiration for her second album, “Memoir of a Sparklemuffin,” released recently. The British singer-songwriter’s latest record explores themes of heartbreak, longing for love, and reflects on her time in the entertainment industry since starting as a teenage model.
Waterhouse, known for her debut album “I Can’t Let Go” and playing Karen Sirko in the Amazon Prime series “Daisy Jones and the Six,” completed the project just before giving birth to her six-month-old daughter with partner Robert Pattinson. Following appearances at the Michael Kors fashion show and the MTV Video Music Awards, Waterhouse shared insights with The Associated Press about creating the album while pregnant and how her role as Sirko propelled her towards fully embracing her music career.
During the interview, Waterhouse highlighted how her pregnancy influenced the album-making process, mentioning how being home-bound allowed her to focus extensively and collaborate with talented musicians nearby. She discussed a particular song on the album, “Model, Actress, Whatever,” as a humorous yet empowering take on reclaiming labels imposed on her. Additionally, playing the confident Karen Sirko inspired her to pursue her music dreams wholeheartedly.
Waterhouse acknowledged the impact of performing live shows post-debut album release and filming “Daisy Jones” on her music creation process. Witnessing audience reactions at concerts like Coachella has influenced her to experiment more with upbeat songs in her repertoire. As she gears up for an upcoming tour, Waterhouse expressed excitement about showcasing new songs and creating an elevated concert experience that surpasses her previous performances.
