In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a tragic incident unfolded as officials announced that a 7-year-old disabled boy named Deonte Atwell was found dead on Christmas Day, weighing only 7 pounds and with bones visibly protruding from his skin. Deonte, who had spina bifida and hydrocephalus, relied on medical devices and constant care that he reportedly did not receive. When authorities responded to a call at the family’s residence on Christmas night, they discovered Deonte in critical condition. Despite being rushed to the hospital, doctors determined that he had likely passed away prior to their arrival, indicating prolonged suffering.
A subsequent investigation revealed 264 unopened bottles of Deonte’s feeding formula in the family home, shedding light on the neglect he endured. Detective Jacqueline Sanchez expressed sorrow over the child’s prolonged pain, attributing it to those entrusted with his care. Following an extensive eight-month inquiry, charges were laid against five individuals connected to the case on Tuesday.
The allegations encompass severe offenses including first-degree murder, manslaughter, and child neglect. Deonte’s mother, Michelle Doe, his brother Tyreck Irvin, and caregiver Cassandre Lassegue face multiple charges, with Doe and Irvin also accused of neglecting Deonte’s siblings ages 9 and 16. Grandfather James Graham is facing charges of aggravated manslaughter, child neglect, and failure to report abuse. Mirlande Moltimer, the owner of the caregiver service employing Lassegue, is implicated in the case as well, charged with third-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter, and child neglect alongside allegations of Medicaid fraud.
During a court hearing, Irvin, Lassegue, and Moltimer were ordered to be held without bond, while Graham’s bond was set at $22,000. Michelle Doe’s court appearance was rescheduled for the following day, and it remains unclear if legal representation has been secured for the accused individuals. The Florida Department of Children and Families is reviewing its records to determine any prior involvement with the family. The investigation into this heart-wrenching ordeal continues to unfold, with the community left in shock and sorrow over the tragic fate of young Deonte.
