Possibility of Temporary Ceasefire with Hamas Discussed by Israeli Defense Chief amid Ongoing Conflict

0

Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, has mentioned that time is running out to achieve a temporary ceasefire agreement with the Hamas militant group. He believes that such a deal could also help calm the northern border with Lebanon. Gallant stated that there is a window of opportunity for a six-week halt in fighting, which would involve the release of many hostages from Gaza. However, he did not commit to a permanent end to the conflict, as Hamas has demanded, which raises uncertainties about the feasibility of reaching an agreement.

Efforts led by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar have been ongoing for several months to negotiate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. One of the main points of contention has been Hamas’ insistence on ending the year-long conflict and a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has introduced a new demand, stating that Israel must maintain a strategic corridor along Gaza’s border with Egypt indefinitely.

Gallant mentioned a proposal to withdraw from the corridor for six weeks to allow the release of hostages without compromising Israel’s security. However, he faced opposition from Netanyahu and other ministers during a recent Cabinet meeting. Gallant emphasized that his priority as defense minister is the security of Israel and its defenders.

The current proposal involves a three-phase plan, starting with a six-week ceasefire where Hamas would release some hostages. In return, Israel would free Palestinian prisoners, withdraw troops from Gaza, facilitate humanitarian aid, and other measures. White House spokesperson John Kirby cited Hamas’ objections to the proposal as a major obstacle.

Gallant expressed doubts about Hamas’ intentions and the potential implementation of the deal’s second phase, which includes the release of all hostages and a complete halt to fighting. He reiterated Israel’s commitment to its war goals, which involve ensuring Hamas cannot threaten Israel’s security. Despite challenges in negotiations, Gallant mentioned an opportunity to pursue at least the first phase of the agreement, which could bring calm and stability to the region.

Hezbollah’s involvement in cross-border exchanges with Israel has added another layer of complexity to the situation, with the potential for broader conflict involving Iran. Gallant highlighted the importance of reaching a strategic agreement to shift the security dynamics in the region. International mediators are working on bridging proposals to address the concerns of all parties involved.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with hundreds of thousands displaced and essential services strained. Gallant has established an advisory group to address critical needs such as healthcare, aid distribution, energy, water, and communication with aid organizations. Discussions on humanitarian issues are held regularly to address the pressing challenges in Gaza.

Gallant remains open to different scenarios, emphasizing Israel’s capacity to defend itself while also being prepared to respond if necessary. The country continues its efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and work towards a sustainable agreement with Hamas.
