Morocco’s Fatima Ezzahra El Idrissi set a new world record in the women’s marathon for visually impaired runners during the Paralympic Games. El Idrissi completed the race in 2 hours, 48 minutes, and 36 seconds, surpassing the previous record by almost 6 minutes. Her compatriot Meryem En-Nourhi came in second, while Spain’s Elena Congost and Japan’s Misato Michishita followed behind.
In the men’s T12 marathon, Tunisia’s Wajdi Boukhili claimed victory with a time of 2 hours, 22 minutes, and 5 seconds. He was ahead of Spain’s Alberto Suarez Laso and Morocco’s El Amin Chentouf, both achieving their season-best times.
Swiss athletes Catherine Debrunner and Marcel Hug emerged as winners in the women’s and men’s T53/54 wheelchair marathons. Debrunner finished first, setting a time of 1:41:50, with Australia’s Madison de Rozario and the United States’ Susannah Scaroni securing silver and bronze, respectively. Tatyana McFadden from the U.S., a renowned wheelchair racer, finished seventh in the race.
Hug claimed victory in the men’s race, crossing the finish line in 1:27:39, followed by China’s Jin Hua and Japan’s Tomoki Suzuki. Additional medal events, including wheelchair basketball, para powerlifting, and para canoe races, were scheduled for later in the day at the Paralympic Games in Paris.
