In Jackson, Mississippi, a former tax assessor and collector in north Mississippi entered a residential treatment center for a gambling addiction after disclosing to the state auditor’s office his misuse of over $300,000 in public funds, as confirmed by his attorney on Tuesday.
Shannon Wilburn, aged 49, who had served in Benton County since 2016, resigned from his elected position in April. He began a 12-week addiction treatment program in late July, according to his attorney, Tony Farese.
“I’ve known Shannon all of his life,” Farese stated. “We are shocked that he finds himself in this situation.”
State Auditor Shad White announced that Wilburn faces a charge of embezzlement, following a recent indictment. After turning himself in to the sheriff’s office last Friday and posting bail, Wilburn returned to the treatment facility as per Farese.
Wilburn allegedly diverted $327,055 intended for the Benton County Tax Collector’s office for personal use, as per Farese. He confessed to the auditor’s office prior to seeking legal counsel and has been cooperating with investigators.
“He apologizes for disappointing the citizens of Benton County and the state of Mississippi,” Farese stated.
If found guilty, Wilburn may be subject to fines up to $5,000 and imprisonment for up to 20 years.
White mentioned that Wilburn’s employment as an elected official in Benton County was secured by $200,000 in surety bonds to safeguard taxpayers from corruption-related losses. Moreover, the county holds an insurance policy to address theft incidents.
“The dedicated team at the State Auditor’s Office will continue working closely with prosecutors to achieve significant outcomes, one case at a time,” White commented in a statement.
