Jannik Sinner Advances to US Open Quarterfinals After Defeating Tommy Paul, Will Face Daniil Medvedev

Top-seeded Jannik Sinner advanced to the U.S. Open quarterfinals after a tough match against No. 14 Tommy Paul on Monday night. Sinner had to battle through tiebreakers in the first two sets before securing a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory. This win sets up a quarterfinal clash with 2021 U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev, the only previous winner left in the men’s field at Flushing Meadows.
Sinner, a 23-year-old from Italy, had previously defeated Medvedev to claim his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open earlier this year. Despite facing early challenges from Paul and a loud, supportive crowd, Sinner managed to regain his composure and dominate the match.
The American crowd was firmly behind Paul, with chants of “U-S-A!” and “Let’s go, Tommy! Let’s go!” echoing throughout the stadium. In a show of poor tennis etiquette, spectators clapped after faults by Sinner, leading to repeated warnings from the umpire.
Sinner’s ability to clean up his game and find his rhythm towards the end of the match was pivotal in his victory over Paul. Winning crucial points in tiebreakers has been a strong suit for Sinner, as he has now won 14 of his last 15 tiebreakers on tour.
The victory marks Sinner’s 12th consecutive win at the U.S. Open, as he continues his impressive form on hard courts this year. In other matches, No. 5-seeded Medvedev cruised to a 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 win over Nuno Borges despite a brief interruption due to a fire alarm.
The men’s quarterfinals at the U.S. Open promise more exciting matchups, with players like Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, Grigor Dimitrov, and Frances Tiafoe set to compete in the coming days.
