Russia initiated an attack on Kyiv, Ukraine, utilizing a combination of drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, as reported by the Ukrainian air force early Monday. The capital city experienced multiple explosions in the early hours of the day, prompting residents to seek shelter in bomb shelters. Mayor Vitalii Klitschko confirmed that emergency services responded to incidents in the Holosiivskyi and Solomianskyi districts, with one person sustaining injuries from falling debris in the Shevchenkivskyi district.
In response to the attack, Andrii Yermak, the head of the Presidential Office, issued a statement on his Telegram page vowing retribution, stating, “There will be an answer for everything. The enemy will feel it.” The air force disclosed that Russia launched groups of cruise missiles alongside ballistic missile launches and deployed drones, specifically targeting Kyiv. Additionally, an explosion was reported in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, according to local media.
This onslaught follows a recent report by Russia’s military, claiming to have intercepted and destroyed 158 Ukrainian drones that were allegedly targeting various Russian regions, constituting one of the most extensive Ukrainian attacks in the ongoing conflict spanning approximately 2.5 years. Moreover, this attack occurred subsequent to Ukrainian forces’ advancement into Russia’s Kursk region, a move that posed challenges for Moscow’s forces and evoked a vow of retaliation from the Kremlin.
