A former New York City police officer has been handed a 27-year prison sentence for shooting her ex-girlfriend and killing the ex-girlfriend’s new partner. Yvonne Wu, 34, received her sentence in a Brooklyn state court on Wednesday following her guilty plea in June to charges of manslaughter and attempted murder involving Jenny Li and Jamie Liang.
Wu committed the crimes while off duty on October 13, 2021, using her NYPD-issued weapon to shoot Li, her former partner, and Liang, who was Li’s new significant other. Tragically, Liang lost her life in the incident, while Li survived but sustained severe injuries.
During the sentencing, Li described the experience as a “living nightmare,” expressing the helplessness of witnessing a life being taken before her eyes. She shared the challenges she faced in recovering from the shooting, including having to relearn basic activities like walking and sitting, as she continues to grapple with feelings of loss, anxiety, and sorrow.
Liang’s father, Ying Cai Liang, fondly remembered his daughter as a genuine, kind, and selfless individual, highlighting her caring nature and the positive impact she had on those around her.
Initially facing a murder charge, Wu opted to plead guilty to manslaughter and attempted murder in June. During the court proceedings, she offered an apology, acknowledging the harm caused and expressing remorse for her actions. Wu recognized the impact of her crimes on those involved and expressed her understanding that forgiveness may be out of reach.
Given the involvement of a police officer, the case was prosecuted by the state attorney general’s office.
