Sudan has faced another disaster as the health ministry reported a dam collapse in the eastern Red Sea state due to heavy rainfall. Local reports suggest that numerous individuals are currently unaccounted for following the collapse of the Arbaat dam.
The health ministry issued a statement on Sunday confirming the collapse of the dam and indicated that emergency resources had been dispatched to assist those affected by the incident. The official statement noted that four individuals had lost their lives in the floodwaters resulting from the dam breach, but did not provide an exact count of the missing persons. Nevertheless, a local official informed the Sudanese news outlet Al-Tagheer that the death toll might exceed 60 people, with numerous others still missing. Amr Eissa Taher, the head irrigation official for the Red Sea state, described the extensive damage caused by the collapse of the dam.
This calamity in Sudan comes amidst ongoing turmoil including a 16-month conflict and devastating flood events. Humanitarian aid organizations classify the situation in Sudan as one of the most severe humanitarian crises globally.
