Russell Wilson and Justin Fields guide Steelers in touchdown drives during 24-17 defeat to Lions in preseason final matchup

Russell Wilson and Justin Fields showcased their skills for the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 24-17 preseason finale loss to the Detroit Lions on Saturday. Jermar Jefferson impressed with two rushing touchdowns for the Lions, including a crucial 7-yard run in the fourth quarter. While Steelers coach Mike Tomlin hasn’t officially named Wilson the starting quarterback, he has indicated that Wilson is the frontrunner for the position.

Wilson, at 35 years old, performed well in Detroit, completing both of his pass attempts, one of which was a 32-yard throw to George Pickens. Both teams scored touchdowns in the first possession, with Cordarrelle Patterson capping off for the Steelers. Fields, on the other hand, had an inconsistent performance with some successful plays mixed with sacks and fumbles.

In an effort to revamp their quarterback situation, the Steelers brought in Wilson after his release from Denver and acquired Fields from Chicago. The Lions, reigning NFC North champions, opted to rest key players like Jared Goff in this preseason game to prioritize their health for the upcoming high-stakes season.

Hendon Hooker, starting for the Lions, faced immediate pressure from the Steelers’ defense but managed to lead his team to two touchdowns before the half. Despite an interception thrown to Cam Sutton, Hooker gained valuable playing time and experience as he prepares for the regular season.

The Lions are set to kick off their season against the Los Angeles Rams on September 8, following their first playoff win in 32 years. Meanwhile, the Steelers will begin their season against Atlanta on the same day.
