Hideki Matsuyama has pulled out of the BMW Championship due to a lower back injury. This decision came following his strong performance in the opening round where he shot a 5-under 67, placing him just one shot behind the leader. Matsuyama, who claimed victory in the PGA Tour’s playoff opener last week, holds the third spot in the FedEx Cup standings. This guarantees him a good starting position in the upcoming Tour Championship, where the champion will earn a $25 million bonus.

The PGA Tour confirmed Matsuyama’s withdrawal just before his scheduled tee time, with the 32-year-old Japanese player, ranked sixth in the world, expressing disappointment over his back discomfort. Despite his withdrawal, Matsuyama extended gratitude to BMW and the Western Golf Association for the positive experience at Castle Pines. Notably, Matsuyama, a former Masters champion, has secured 10 PGA Tour wins, adding two victories this season to his impressive record.
