A man in Alaska was hospitalized after a brown bear attack that also resulted in him being shot while trying to defend himself, according to authorities. The incident took place on Saturday on the Kenai Peninsula, southwest of Anchorage, as reported by the Alaska State Troopers. The victim, a 32-year-old hunter, sustained severe injuries from both the bear mauling and the gunshot wound. During the encounter, the hunter and his companion fired their weapons, resulting in the man being shot in the leg. It remains uncertain who fired the shot that wounded him, as stated by troopers spokesperson Tim DeSpain in an email statement. The brown bear was killed during the incident.

The attack occurred in a remote area off the Resurrection Pass trail, with details of the events leading up to it still unknown. The injured hunter, whose name has not been disclosed, was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in Anchorage for treatment.
