A police officer in Georgia is facing criminal charges for allegedly pulling a gun on three individuals while responding to a call regarding an assault. Kenneth Bishop, 60 years old from Swainsboro, Georgia, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and making terroristic threats and acts. The incident occurred on July 26 and prompted an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation at the request of the Soperton Police Department.
During the response to the assault call, Bishop reportedly stopped a car occupied by three individuals who were related to friends of the assault victim. An argument ensued between Bishop and the individuals in the car, leading Bishop to brandish his firearm. The GBI reported that Bishop pointed the gun at the car’s occupants, struck the windows, and made threats to shoot the car.
Bishop was released from jail after posting a $25,000 bail. There is no listed attorney for Bishop, and he has not responded to emails. The Soperton Police Chief, James Mills, did not return calls for comment.
Records show that Bishop was terminated from the Soperton Police Department on July 31. This was his second tenure with the department, having previously resigned in July 2023 before being rehired in November of the same year. Bishop has also worked as a police officer in Swainsboro and as a corrections officer.
The case will be reviewed by District Attorney Craig Fraser for possible indictment once the investigation is concluded. Soperton, a town with approximately 2,900 residents, is located about 65 miles southeast of Macon, Georgia.
