Ansari urges Democratic unity after securing nomination in Arizona congressional race

Yassamin Ansari, a former Phoenix City Council member, secured the Democratic nomination for an open congressional district in Arizona, winning over her opponent by a narrow margin of 39 votes after a recount in a state crucial for the upcoming general election. Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Jennifer Ryan-Touhill announced Ansari as the victor over former state legislator Raquel Terán during the announcement in a downtown courtroom.

After being declared the winner, Ansari expressed her gratitude to the voters in a social media post, emphasizing the importance of uniting for Democratic victories in the approaching November elections. Terán, in her concession message, acknowledged the impact of each vote and conceded defeat, extending congratulations to Ansari for her win.

The upcoming general election will witness Ansari squaring off against Republican Jeff Zink, who previously ran for the same position in 2022 but lost to Democrat Ruben Gallego. Zink, a pastor, and his son were present outside the U.S. Capitol during the events of January 6, 2021. He has challenged the charges against his son and questioned the validity of the 2020 presidential election.

The recount process was initiated on August 12 after Maricopa County Board of Supervisors officially certified the results of the July 30 primary, triggering an automatic recount as the margin between Ansari and Terán was within .5 percentage points. Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes requested the recount, setting the stage for the judicial involvement that resulted in Ansari’s victory confirmation.

Ansari, the daughter of Iranian immigrants who previously served as Phoenix’s vice mayor, campaigned on a platform supporting progressive policies, vowing to safeguard democracy and reproductive rights against what she referred to as “MAGA extremists.” Terán, on the other hand, highlighted her grassroots activism work and thwarting Joe Arpaio’s attempt to reclaim the Maricopa County sheriff position. She also emphasized her past role as the chair of the Arizona Democratic Party.

The 3rd District of Arizona, which leans Democratic, covers parts of Phoenix and became available when Gallego pursued a Senate campaign. Gallego will compete against Republican Kari Lake in that race. Arizona is anticipated to be a battleground state in the crucial upcoming U.S. presidential election, with tight contests expected across various ballot issues including abortion and immigration, aiming to drive voter turnout.
