US intelligence officials attribute campaign hacks to Iran against Trump and Biden-Harris

U.S. intelligence officials have pointed to Iran as the culprit behind the cyber attack on Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, framing it as part of a wider effort by Tehran to interfere in U.S. politics and potentially influence the election’s outcome. This assessment from the FBI and other federal agencies is the first time the U.S. government has attributed responsibility for these hacks, highlighting Iran as a significant concern alongside more advanced adversaries like Russia and China.

In addition to breaching the Trump campaign, officials suspect Iran also attempted to hack into the campaign of Kamala Harris. The motive behind these hacking activities, according to federal officials, is to fuel discord, exploit divisions within American society, and potentially sway the results of elections that Iran considers crucial for its national security interests. The FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency released a joint statement expressing concerns over Iran’s escalating activities during the election cycle, including influence operations and cyber attacks targeting presidential campaigns.

Iran’s mission to the United Nations refuted these allegations, labeling them as baseless and lacking evidence. The statement challenged the U.S. to provide proof, promising a corresponding response if such evidence is presented. Amidst rising tensions between Washington and Tehran, the FBI released the statement as the U.S. endeavors to prevent retaliatory actions against Israel following recent events in the region.

While the U.S. did not elaborate on the specifics of how the conclusion about Iran’s involvement was reached, the intelligence community remains confident in its assessment. Notably, there were phishing attempts targeting staffers in the Biden-Harris campaign, but no evidence suggests these efforts were successful. U.S. officials underscored that such interference from Iran and Russia is not unprecedented, with both countries historically resorting to similar tactics to influence elections globally.

Highlighting Iran’s recent aggressive stance in U.S. elections, intelligence officials noted its attempts to undermine Trump’s re-election bid in 2020. Concerns have also been voiced regarding Tehran’s desire for retribution following previous incidents involving the U.S. and Iran. The Trump campaign had disclosed being hacked by Iranian actors, who allegedly obtained and disseminated sensitive internal documents, and leaked information to various news outlets.

Private companies’ investigations parallel the U.S. government’s assessment, with reports from Microsoft detailing Iranian agents’ efforts to interfere in the election and Google identifying Iranian-linked groups attempting to infiltrate email accounts of individuals linked to both President Joe Biden and Trump. These reports collectively paint a picture of the covert operations orchestrated by Iran to manipulate the electoral landscape in the U.S. and abroad.
