The Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined a forum in Cali, discussing the participation of Afro-Colombian women in politics while immersing themselves in the traditional music festival of the city.
Their visit, initiated by Vice President Francia Márquez, aimed to promote cultural and social causes aligned with their advocacy through the Archewell Foundation. Embracing the Afro-influenced ambiance, the royal couple listened to insights from Black leaders at the “Afro Women and Power” forum and expressed gratitude towards Colombia’s warm reception.
Acknowledging the complexities of Black women’s participation in politics due to racism and discrimination, panelists emphasized the importance of addressing inequality and poverty within Black communities. Vice President Márquez appealed to Prince Harry and Meghan to provide financial assistance and enhance social programs for women impacted by gender violence and youth challenges.
The visit also included trips to towns renowned for preserving African heritage, such as San Basilio de Palanque in Cartagena, where the couple interacted with local communities and leaders. In Bogota, they engaged in digital security discussions, advocating for mental health and combatting cyberbullying among children and teens. Additionally, they visited a school and met with military personnel and veterans affected by Colombia’s longstanding internal conflicts.
