Israel’s far-right finance minister has faced strong condemnation from Western allies for his comments suggesting that starving over 2 million Palestinians in Gaza could be considered “just and moral” until hostages captured in a recent Hamas attack are returned. Bezalel Smotrich made these remarks during a speech on Monday, stating that although sending humanitarian aid into Gaza was necessary, starving the population might be a justifiable measure. Smotrich, a key ally in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition, supports the reoccupation of Gaza and the rebuilding of settlements removed in 2005.
The European Union, through foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, criticized Smotrich’s remarks, labeling deliberate starvation of civilians as a war crime. Britain’s foreign secretary, David Lammy, also condemned the comments, calling for a retraction and condemnation from the wider Israeli government. Germany’s ambassador to Israel, Steffen Siebert, deemed the remarks as unacceptable and appalling, emphasizing the importance of protecting civilians in times of conflict.
The escalating crisis in Gaza, sparked by Hamas’ attack, has led to a dire humanitarian situation. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification warned in June that Gaza was at high risk of famine. Aid organizations face challenges delivering assistance due to Israeli restrictions, ongoing fighting, and the breakdown of order. Hamas’ attack into Israel resulted in many casualties and hostages, with Israel’s offensive leading to significant Palestinian deaths and extensive destruction.
