A Marathon Swimmer Attempts to Cross Lake Michigan Again after 1998 Success

Jim Dreyer, also known as The Shark, has returned to the waters with the goal of replicating his remarkable 1998 achievement of swimming across Lake Michigan. Starting from Grand Haven, Michigan, Dreyer ventured into the lake on Tuesday, en route to Wisconsin. The anticipated journey to Milwaukee is estimated to span around 83 miles (134 kilometers), subject to potential alterations based on lake conditions.

Prefacing his endeavor with an acknowledgment of its risks, Dreyer, now 60, expressed his understanding of the challenges associated with this self-supported swim. Dubbed The Shark ahead of his initial historic swim, Dreyer has equipped himself with supplies towed in an inflatable boat linked to him. In the event of any emergencies, he can utilize satellite communications to reach out to a support team.

Conveying his aspiration for adventurous individuals universally to be captivated by this calculated risk, Dreyer is also fundraising for the nonprofit U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Association during his current venture. His memorable feat in 1998 involved swimming from Two Rivers, Wisconsin, to Michigan’s Ludington State Park, a strenuous accomplishment lasting close to 41 hours.

While Dreyer attempted a crossing of the lake last year, adverse weather conditions led him to abandon the mission after a mere 10 hours.
