85-year-old JoAnne Carner achieves remarkable score of 80 at U.S. Senior Women’s Open

At 85 years old, JoAnne Carner impressed spectators at the U.S. Senior Women’s Open in Fox Chapel by shooting a 9-over 80 in the second round. Following her impressive performance the previous day where she matched her age with an 85, Carner showcased her skills with consecutive birdies on the par-5 second and par-3 third on her second nine.
The golf legend has a remarkable record of shooting her age or lower eight times in the U.S. Senior Women’s Open since its inception in 2018, achieving this feat seven times in her last eight rounds. Carner boasts an impressive collection of eight U.S. Golf Association titles, the most by a female player, including victories in the U.S. Women’s Open in 1971 and 1976, six U.S. Women’s Amateur titles, and one U.S. Girls’ Junior championship.
Meanwhile, Kaori Yamamoto of Japan took the lead midway through the round with a five-stroke advantage, shooting her second consecutive 67 to reach 8 under. Lisa Grimes showed strong gameplay, hitting 3 under early in her afternoon round. Additionally, renowned players such as Annika Sorenstam (69), Juli Inkster (68), and Leta Lindley (71) also held a 3-under score. Sorenstam emerged victorious in the 2021 U.S. Senior Women’s Open event.
Unfortunately, despite her remarkable performance, Carner will not make the weekend cut at the tournament. Fans can stay updated on the latest developments in the world of golf through AP golf coverage.
