In Paris, amidst the flurry of photographers snapping away at the beach volleyball action during the 2024 Olympic Games, 63-year-old British painter Peter Spens stands out with his traditional tools of brushes, oil paints, and canvas. Describing himself as a “troglodyte” in the midst of modern technology, Spens believes his paintings capture the essence and spirit of the event in a way that photographs cannot.
Commissioned by the International Volleyball Federation, Spens is on his third assignment at the Summer Olympic Games, tasked with creating a single image that encapsulates the entire competition. While photographers produce thousands of images, Spens focuses on one painting, aiming to convey the emotions and energy of the game through his brush strokes.
Positioned at a prime spot overlooking the beach volleyball court with the iconic Eiffel Tower in the background, Spens finds inspiration in this picturesque setting despite the challenges it presents. Painting tirelessly from morning till night, he meticulously includes details of players, spectators, and the Parisian landmark, knowing that the final touches will coincide with the crowning of the Olympic champions.
Despite the rapid advancements in technology and the prevalence of smartphones, Spens remains steadfast in his belief in the timeless value of traditional art forms. Having created Olympic beach volleyball paintings for London and Rio, Spens missed the Tokyo Games due to the pandemic but is back in full swing in Paris, capturing the teamwork and skill of the world’s best players. With a deep passion for the sport and a dedication to his craft, Spens continues to defy the digital age with his unique artistic perspective on the dynamic and thrilling atmosphere of the Olympic Games.
