Blinken highlights broader commitments to aid Ukraine if US withdraws support under Trump

Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed confidence that Ukraine is making progress towards self-sufficiency in its military capabilities. He mentioned that over 20 other nations have pledged to continue providing their own military and financial aid to Ukraine should the U.S. decide to withdraw support under a potential new president.

Addressing concerns about former President Donald Trump possibly winning the upcoming election and altering support for Ukraine, Blinken highlighted the critical role the U.S. has played under President Joe Biden in assisting Ukraine in its battle against Russian invasion. Trump’s stance on supporting Ukraine has been inconsistent, with Senator JD Vance being a key figure in Republican opposition to the significant U.S. aid sent to Ukraine following Russia’s invasion in 2022.

There are growing worries among Ukraine and its allies that a shift in U.S. leadership could lead to a reduction in crucial support for the country, particularly considering the rise of Trump’s campaign and Biden’s diminishing popularity. Blinken emphasized the bipartisan congressional support for Ukraine as a crucial element in countering Russian President Vladimir Putin’s territorial ambitions.

While acknowledging that each administration has the freedom to determine its policies, Blinken pointed out the security agreements recently signed by the United States and over 20 other allies at a NATO summit in Washington. He underscored that even if the U.S. were to change its position, there are numerous other countries, including NATO members, Japan, and the European Union, committed to continuing their support for Ukraine.

Blinken highlighted Ukraine’s progress towards achieving self-sufficiency in military, economic, and democratic aspects, indicating that the country is moving towards a position of increased independence and stability.
