The Sundance Institute has revealed the six finalists being considered as potential new host locations for the prestigious film festival. Park City, Utah, which has been home to the festival for the past 40 years, is being replaced by cities across the country for festivals starting in 2027. However, Park City and Salt Lake City will continue to host the festivals in 2025 and 2026. Along with the Utah cities, the other five finalists are Atlanta, Cincinnati, Boulder in Colorado, Louisville in Kentucky, and Santa Fe in New Mexico.
These cities were chosen based on their ability to support the festival’s growth, and they will be assessed on factors such as infrastructure, accessibility, event venues, and logistical capabilities, as well as how well they align with the values of the Sundance Institute. The organization aims to secure a sustainable future for the festival and build upon its legacy while nurturing emerging storytellers and showcasing innovative works of art.
Sundance has a reputation for launching the careers of independent filmmakers, with past winners including renowned directors like Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino. Films that have premiered at Sundance often go on to receive critical acclaim and recognition, such as last year’s festival entry “Past Lives,” which was nominated for best picture and best screenplay.
Each of the finalist cities boasts a vibrant arts community with diverse cultural backgrounds and potential for growth, making them appealing options for the future home of the festival. The decision-making process involves site visits to each city by members of the Sundance Institute selection committee, with a final decision expected in early 2025.
Robert Redford, who founded the festival, has been involved in the decision-making process alongside his daughter and other board members. The mayors and governors of the finalist cities have expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to host the festival and are working towards a collaborative vision that aims to revitalize the festival experience for the next 40 years with a focus on storytelling.
