Democrats targeting early August for presidential nomination, with calls for Biden to drop out of the race

0

Democrats are planning to conduct a virtual vote in early August to officially nominate President Joe Biden as their party’s candidate for the upcoming election. This decision comes after Biden dismissed suggestions from some within the party to step down following a poor debate performance. The Democratic National Convention’s rules committee will convene this week to discuss the logistics, with a final decision expected to be made next week.
The committee co-chairs, Bishop Leah D. Daughtry and Gov. Tim Walz, outlined in a letter obtained by the Associated Press that the virtual vote will not occur before August 1 but will be completed before August 7, which was Ohio’s original filing deadline. They emphasized the importance of not rushing the virtual voting process and ensuring a thorough consideration of how it will be implemented.
Initially, the party had announced plans for an early roll call vote to meet Ohio’s August 7 deadline. However, Ohio has since adjusted its rules. Nevertheless, the Biden campaign argues that the party should abide by Ohio’s initial regulations to prevent potential legal challenges from Republican lawmakers seeking to block President Biden from appearing on the state’s ballot in the upcoming election.
