WNBA All-Star weekend features exciting matchup between US team and standout league players before Olympic break

0

The WNBA is gearing up for its Olympic break after the exciting All-Star events taking place this weekend. The American squad will face off against Team WNBA, which includes standout players Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, in what could be one of their toughest games during the break.

Last year, the WNBA All-Star team secured a victory against Team USA, marking the only defeat the U.S. team faced on their way to claiming a seventh consecutive gold medal. U.S. coach Cheryl Reeve expressed determination to avenge that loss and emphasized the talent on the opposing team, expecting an incredible game.

Returning players like Arike Ogunbowale and Jonquel Jones, who were part of the winning team in 2021, are back for this year’s All-Star Game. Jones recalled the serious tone set by the All-Stars in the previous year’s match, indicating a heightened level of competitiveness.

The All-Star weekend could become even more intriguing if top players like Caitlin Clark and defending 3-point champion Sabrina Ionescu participate in Friday night’s skills competition. Ionescu, who had a remarkable performance last year, hesitated on confirming her participation, citing competing priorities and the exceptional nature of her previous experience.

In the latest AP WNBA power poll, New York retained the top position, with Las Vegas climbing back to second place. Teams like Connecticut, Seattle, Minnesota, and Indiana followed in the rankings. The teams are set to play their final game before the break.

Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark, the current league leader in assists per game, saw her consecutive streak of double-figure assists end but still contributed to her team’s recent success. Additionally, rookie Rickea Jackson showcased her talent with a season-best performance for the Los Angeles Sparks.

A’ja Wilson was named the AP Player of the Week for the second week in a row. The Las Vegas Aces forward stood out with impressive averages in points, rebounds, and blocks, aiding her team in achieving a flawless 3-0 record. Sabrina Ionescu of the New York Liberty also received recognition for her outstanding performances.

The highly anticipated game of the week will feature the U.S. Olympic team facing off against the WNBA All-Stars on Saturday.
