French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer refrained from directly addressing Biden’s gaffe, instead highlighting the importance of unity within NATO.
The potential return of Trump to the presidency raised concerns among European capitals due to his previous skepticism towards NATO. In contrast, Biden reaffirmed his commitment to NATO and preventing Ukraine from falling to Russian influence. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg expressed confidence in the alliance’s bipartisan support in the U.S. and the increasing military spending contributions from member states.
While NATO did not extend a formal invitation for Ukraine to join the alliance, they pledged continued support for Ukraine’s defense efforts against Russia. The allies committed to providing air defense systems, fighter jets, and military training to assist Ukraine in deterring further aggression. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged for expedited military aid delivery and the removal of restrictions on using U.S. weapons against Russian military targets.
NATO leaders issued stronger criticism towards China for supporting Russia’s actions in Ukraine. The alliance condemned China as a key supporter of Russia’s war efforts and highlighted Chinese investments in Russia’s defense sector. Additionally, Indo-Pacific countries attending the summit expressed solidarity in condemning military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, underscoring the importance of upholding international peace and security.
The summit concluded with a renewed commitment to NATO’s unity and collective defense, emphasizing the global significance of security cooperation among member states and their partners.
