A police standoff that lasted over 18 hours in Elkhart, Indiana ended with state troopers entering the home and taking an armed 37-year-old man into custody. Sadly, during the operation, authorities found a 2-year-old boy dead inside the residence. The man is now in custody at the Elkhart County Jail awaiting a charging decision from the county prosecutor’s office. When state troopers entered the home on Sunday afternoon, they discovered the lifeless body of the 2-year-old boy. They also found a 4-year-old girl inside the house, who was treated and then released to a relative.
The standoff commenced around 9 p.m. on Saturday when Elkhart County Sheriff’s deputies were called to check on the man and his two children at a home in Elkhart. Despite deputies not locating the man, they were informed that he was armed, inside the home, and had made threats against his children and law enforcement.
An attempt was made by the Elkhart SWAT team early on Sunday to contact the man. He refused to exit the premises and fired a weapon before barricading himself inside the house. Law enforcement officials tried several times to establish communication with the man but were largely unsuccessful until state troopers finally entered the home.
