Chicago suburban for-profit college closes following federal investigation

A college located in Oak Lawn, Chicago, suddenly shut down following a federal evaluation. In an email sent to students on Saturday, Northwestern College conveyed the news of its closure, as reported by WGN-TV. In the email, President Lawrence Schumacher mentioned that the U.S. Department of Education had been scrutinizing the college. Consequently, the flow of federal student aid was paused, with funds now being provided on a reimbursement basis. Due to payment delays of 45 days or more, the institution could no longer manage the financial gaps after two years under this system. The specific reasons for the federal review were not disclosed in Schumacher’s email. The U.S. Department of Education did not promptly respond to a voicemail left by The Associated Press in their media mailbox on Monday. Despite its long history of 122 years in operation, the college’s closure has left students like nursing student Destini Hampton feeling devastated, as she described to WGN-TV.
