LONDON — Newly elected British Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces a host of challenges as he assumes office following a rigorous six-week election campaign. As a center-left politician, Starmer now must swiftly put together his government, address numerous domestic issues, and shape the U.K.’s foreign relations.

Starmer’s initial task, akin to arranging furniture in a new home, is to construct a Cabinet. With his Labour Party securing over 400 seats in Thursday’s election, he has an abundance of lawmakers to choose from for key positions like Treasury chief Rachel Reeves and Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

Expressing a desire for the U.K. to have a stronger global presence, Starmer has engaged with world leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Starmer’s leadership begins amidst multiple international crises that will test his abilities honed during his tenure as Britain’s chief prosecutor.

Set to make his international debut at NATO’s 75th-anniversary summit in Washington, Starmer is committed to maintaining Britain’s support for Ukraine and increasing military spending. He also faces internal party divisions on issues such as Israel’s conflict with Hamas.

Starmer aims to repair strained relationships with European neighbors post-Brexit, without intending to reverse the decision. His domestic agenda includes tackling economic challenges, healthcare strains, migration control, and climate change commitments.

The new government’s legislative agenda will be unveiled on July 17 during the ceremonial State Opening of Parliament. Amid heightened public expectations, Starmer is facing the weight of the task ahead as he leads the U.K. into a new political era.
