ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan – On Wednesday, Turkmenistan and Iran have signed a contract for Iran to receive and transfer 10 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas annually to Iraq. The announcement of the deal was made by Turkmenistan’s foreign ministry, although the exact financial details were not disclosed.
Iranian companies are set to build a new 125-kilometer pipeline, expanding the infrastructure to increase Turkmenistan’s gas delivery capacity to Iran. Turkmenistan is aiming to boost its gas exports to Iran to a total of 40 billion cubic meters per year.
Last year, Iraq faced challenges with the supply of Iranian gas, which previously made up around 40% of its imports. This agreement between Turkmenistan and Iran offers a solution to support Iraq’s energy demands.
Turkmenistan, with substantial natural gas reserves, heavily relies on gas sales as a significant source of revenue. In response to the disruptions in gas supply to Iraq, Turkmenistan’s government has been seeking alternative measures to ensure the smooth functioning of power plants in its central and southern regions.
Turkmenistan, a former Soviet republic, depends largely on the export of natural gas. Currently, China is the primary importer of Turkmen gas. Additionally, Turkmenistan is actively working on a pipeline project to supply gas to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, further expanding its global energy partnerships and market reach.
