The wildfire, known as the Thompson Fire, began on Tuesday near Oroville, sending a massive plume of smoke into the sky and expanding to over 5.5 square miles. A significant drop in fire activity was noted on Wednesday, with hopes that some residents may soon be able to return home. Firefighters battled extreme heat and challenging terrain, managing to halt the fire’s progress on the southern front while working on containment lines on the northern side, achieving 7% containment by Wednesday evening.
In addition to the Thompson Fire, more than a dozen other wildfires were reported across California, with the Basin Fire in the Sierra National Forest being the state’s largest blaze at nearly 22 square miles and 26% containment. Oroville declared a state of emergency, enlarging evacuation zones into the foothills and rural areas beyond the city. Due to the ongoing evacuations and damage caused by the Thompson Fire, authorities canceled Oroville’s fireworks show despite it having been officially permitted.
Officials warned of serious legal consequences for any unauthorized use of fireworks, emphasizing the high fire risk in the area. The cause of the fire was under investigation, with red flag warnings in place for critical fire weather conditions. Pacific Gas & Electric proactively turned off power in parts of Northern California to reduce fire hazards related to electrical issues. Down in Southern California, Joshua Tree National Park shut down the Covington Flats area due to extreme fire risk resulting from dry grass following spring rains.
