11 NY Students Hospitalized After Consuming Cannabis Gummies

MORICHES, New York — Authorities along with administrators at a New York suburban middle school are investigating the circumstances that led to a student distributing marijuana-laced gummies to peers, resulting in 11 students being hospitalized.

The incident took place on Monday morning at William Floyd Middle School, located in Moriches, a community on Long Island. The affected students, aged 13 and 14, were reported by Suffolk County police. As of now, officials have not disclosed further details about the origin of these marijuana edibles. It remains uncertain if the student distributing them was aware of the drug content in the gummies.

Updates regarding the conditions of the hospitalized students have yet to be provided. In an official statement released later on Monday, the William Floyd School District noted that a twelfth student was taken home by family members without requiring hospital care.

So far, no criminal charges have been pressed, and it is yet to be determined whether any disciplinary action will be taken against the students involved.

The event echoes similar incidents in various U.S. schools in recent times, including cases reported in California and Connecticut. At least one previous incident involved California elementary students who mistakenly believed the drug-laced edibles to be ordinary candy.
